Built between 1883 and 1886 to handle trade in what was the largest coal exporting town in the world, Cardiff’s Coal Exchange is one of the finest venues of its size in Wales. In 1958 the Coal Exchange trading floor closed as the coal industry declined and the hall fell into general disuse. But in 1988 it was re-acquired and was set to re-affirm itself as the beating heart of the new Bay.
In 2001 the building was completely refurbished and these alterations made the Hall a major venue, with an increased capacity to 1, 000. It’s a versatile and diversely programmed venue but is widely known as the best live music venue in Wales, playing host to world class artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Manic Street Preachers, Ocean Colour Scene, Stereophonics and Biffy Clyro to name a few.
