The Edinburgh festival is the biggest arts festival in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. The Edinburgh festival sold 1.9 million tickets in 2011, with over 40,000 performances taking place across 250+ venues. In addition, this is officially “YEAR OF CREATIVE SCOTLAND 2012”, a chance to spotlight, celebrate and promote Scotland’s cultural and creative strengths on the world stage. With a tradition of opera, jazz, swing and blues events already in place, adding an alternative Edinburgh music fest-within-a-fest of buzzing new music (from folk, dub step and hip hop to electro, acoustic and rock) is timely!

The winning act will perform as part of BandWagon’s ‘The Art Of Live Performance’ show at the Edinburgh festival. The show is aimed at DIY music, focusing on the importance of playing live, and web tools available to grassroots musicians. Speakers and panellist will come from all aspects of the industry with a strong emphasis on live performance. The show will consist of a conference, and three days of gigs which will consist of a mix of BandWagon artists and special guest sets. The show will take place Sunday 12th August and Live Music Monday 13th – Wednesday 15th August at the Edinburgh festival.
As well as winning a slot at the Edinburgh festival to perform as part of BandWagon’s ‘The Art Of Live Performance’ show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012, the winning act of each Live and Unsigned category will win an additional free premium service from BandWagon Gigs.
BandWagon is a new service/website that finds gig opportunities for artists created by promoters and event organisers. Adding to its initial success, BandWagon now plans further proliferation of gig opportunities across the UK offering artists a sustainable gigging platform. Gig opportunities are now posted daily and there are currently over 260 gig opportunities on the BandWagon gig board across the UK.
Not yet six months old, it has grown and developed rapidly with an excess of 1,000 artists in January within their first 3 months, with great feedback from its users, “Effectively, speed-dating for bands and promoters alike. Great idea,’’ - (Music Biz embassy).

This Edinburgh festival isn’t the only prize for the 2012 champion. So far the winner of Live and Unsigned 2012 is confirmed to be going to Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bingley Music Live, Norfolk Spectacular, Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters, Strawberry Fields Festival, Cloud 9 Festival, Brownstock, ButserFest, Glass Butter Beach, Just So Festival, Cockermouth Rock Festival, Stockton Weekender, London Summer Jam and Lancaster Music Festival, and this list is only set to grow!
Live and Unsigned is the biggest unsigned music competition for original unsigned bands and artists in the UK. It offers the finalists the chance to play at The O2 in London alongside some of the UK's best musicians at Live Fest, London’s biggest indoor festival. There’s also £100,000 worth of prizes to be won, including an additional new main cash prize of £10,000 for the winning act to spend on development.
Auditions began each year in January and will run through until March, and all acts in the competition are auditioned live. Acts that make it through the audition stage will get to perform to industry judges, A & R associates and celebrity guests. Judging last year’s competition and hopefully set to join the panel again include; Radio 1 DJ’s Annie Nightingale, Ras Kwame, Tom Deacon and Daniel P Carter; Kerrang’s Alex Baker; and Happy Mondays star Bez.
