Live and Unsigned Scam
Is Live and Unsigned a scam? Well let’s review the facts and put things into context. Live and Unsigned has over 10,000 act entries a year and thus encapsulates some 25,000 musicians, as many are in bands having 4 or 5 members. If you multiply that figure that by the four years Live and Unsigned has been running so far, that starts to kick the amount of bands and acts involved to somewhere in the region of 100,000 people.
So let’s get things into perspective, trying to please 100,000 people all at once is virtually impossible, although we try our very best. It is also true that people in general are far more likely to write and complain rather than express contentment with their experiences. We pride ourselves in answering any questions our entrants put to us and run an open culture. If people have questions we will happily answer them and invite people to contact us directly.
What do bands and acts want...
-
Exposure! On three counts;
-
To more fans and exposure
-
To press
-
To industry Judging panel
-
-
To support headline acts, such as Cancer Bats, Dub Pistols, Attack! Attack!
-
Festival slots
-
Studio time
-
Development opportunities, such as the Institute Master Classes
Live and Unsigned is a platform for all of the things listed above - so embrace it and use it. No one is promising Christmas number one (even if you wanted it). There is no quick fix or red button to making it, but Live and Unsigned is a step in the right direction, providing its entrants with opportunities, advice and exposure.
High profile DJs wouldn’t happily put their names to the competition it if it was a scam, this year will be Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale’s third year judging with us, and Tom Deacon from Radio 1 will also be on the Judging panel alongside Ras Kwame, they are joined in turn by Kerrang and NME radio DJs.
“This is great exposure – competing in a competition like this will get you recognised and winning it will attract great interest.”Annie Nightingale MBE, Radio 1 Presenter
“If you’re in a band and you’re looking for a way to expose yourself to more people in the industry, Live and Unsigned is a good opportunity to do that, because there aren’t that many avenues that have the same level of credibility.”Alex Baker, Kerrang Radio
“It’s a great opportunity to expose yourself to the world. It does what it says on the tin. It’s Live and Unsigned and about new talent coming through.”Ras Kwame, Radio 1 DJ and presenter
SCAM
Headline grabbing isn’t it? It's how newspapers are sold and SEO works on the internet, but drill down on internet search engines and after the first few threads (which are factually incorrect) at the bottom of page one, the SEO picks up ticket sales sites which sell Live and Unsigned tickets and warn of ticket sales scams. Internet search optimisation is not an exact science, it will pick up words in isolation, even if not relevant to the exact search, and add them to together to meet your search terms, in this case ticket scam and Live and Unsigned.
MOVE FORWARD
So to recap, from 100,000 musicians involved and some great winners and success stories, why not put things into context and judge for yourself by getting involved in Live and Unsigned. Experience all that this competition has to offer at least then you’ll know for yourself!
If you don’t feel that the platform and exposure Live and Unsigned offers is for your act or band, then that’s perfectly fine but you should explore every avenue in an ever-growing, fast changing music industry. Although opportunities on the internet are expanding by the day, with more and more live venues shutting all the time, the avenues for up and coming acts and bands to perform live are becoming ever harder to secure.
