Paul King has been an artist manager for more than 25 years.

Paul’s management career started when he was persuaded to help manage The Teardrop Explodes in the early eighties. As Julian Cope went solo, Paul helped Julian become an enormously credible solo artist. Julian enjoyed immense artistic control to the point of having a lucrative record deal with Island Records and being able to release some of his material on his own independent label at the same time! Two of Julian’s greatest fans were Curt and Roland from Tears For Fears. At their request, Paul became their manager just before the release of Mad World, which went straight to number 3 in the UK charts. 20 years on Mad World was the first UK number one for 2004. Songwriters take note.

Paul went on to manage Level 42, Johnny Hates Jazz, Fairground Attraction and Breathe.

When Paul took over the management of Level 42, Polygram would not release their product in America. Within a year they were persuaded to reverse that decision and with Paul’s help at radio, the band had a top 5, US single and a gold album.

Breathe, another UK based band managed by Paul remain the only group in the history of A&M records to have two top 5 singles from a first album in the US. This album went platinum.

Paul has for many years specialised in breaking acts on American radio. He has been retained by a number of labels to help promote US based artists. The most unusual request came from Polygram when Paul was called in to help with a Russian Band called Gorky Park. The assignment was accepted and the single went top 20 on Billboard, the Album going on to sell over 350,000 copies.

During his period as a record promotion consultant in America at one point Paul was responsible for having four singles in the Billboard top 20 at the same time. Artists managed by Paul have sold over 32 million records under his direction.
